Meet the face
behind the posts

Howdy, I’m Kathryn Egeland and I work on the “Other Side of the Rail.” I was born and raised in central Iowa. Grew up in a 4-H family learning about agriculture, the value of volunteering, leadership and so many other things. My passion for animals of all shapes and sizes started early. While I was in 4-H I started showing dogs and that project blossomed into 20 years of showing dogs professionally. During that time, I met and married my husband, Lynn. Our 25th anniversary will be in June 2021.

We moved to Wisconsin in 2001 to focus on our financial planning and insurance business (shameless plug … incontrolpremiums.com). Our plan was to learn about running an office in our business then move back to Iowa in a couple years. Wisconsin had other plans. We found lifelong friendships, a church to call home, several opportunities to do the things we are passionate about and our business began growing.  In 2006 we built a house near Madison. Needless to say, we were staying in Wisconsin.

We still live in the Madison area, our business continues to grow and we have added a few things to the “to do” list. Since the fall of 2011 we have been working horse shows. What started as a once-a-month break from the norm has become a second career with one weekend a month off during show season, well, some months anyway.  We now manage our church’s food pantry garden and I’m a horse and pony project superintendent.  We also volunteered for an equine assisted therapy program for 10 years.

In my spare time I embroider, write poetry, and read. Now I’m adding blogging. I’ve filled most positions a show has: manager, office staff, gate person, ringmaster, warm-up paddock manager, clerk, equipment setup person and announcer. No matter what role I’m in my favorite part of a show, or horse event of any kind really, is hanging out with other horse enthusiasts while telling stories, sharing lessons learned, or learning new lessons myself. Sharing tips, tricks, and how-to's. Laughing over the “did that really happen” moments and hugging over the “tear your heart out” moments. One of my goals is to bring that camaraderie and fun to this blog. This is a new adventure for me and I invite you to come along. All you have to do is subscribe.  Hopefully, you’ll laugh a bit, learn a bit and come back week after week.
